Dear Teacher,
"How could it ever get better?" "It seems like nothing works." "We've tried everything." These are comments that I hear from frustrated teachers with their students on a regular basis. I know it can be frustrating because I've been there. I interned in Comal ISD in both elementary and high school education, I substituted for a year in all grade levels for Northside ISD, and I hear daily from my wife who has taught for many years in elementary education. But I want you to know that I AM HERE TO HELP! I will be working with the student, the parent/s, the family, the administration, and yourself to help this child be successful. Each child is individually different, however I have adapted some amazing materials from Howard Glasser, a counselor in Tucson, AZ, (see resource page) that has proven results.
I hope that our working relationship can prove to become fruitful and help the student become successful. You are amazing in managing such a diverse class of children, but I need you to work especially on this one student. I invite you to download the sample Interactive Plus Notes below that we will be using with our student. Depending on how the child responds we may only have to use the Plus Notes for a short time. Remember, I need short positive statements that describe the positive behavior. what would you rather hear... "you are pretty" OR "your new shorter haircut really accentuates your bright blue eyes and makes you look WOW." Descriptions make us pay attention and remember what the other person is saying. Yes, longer messages take longer to convey, but they are shorter than 15 minutes of constant redirection.
